Life of a Tour Guide - Session One

Session One, Life of a Tour Guide, kicks off the 6 -part tour Guide Training series. Our presenter will use knowledge and stories from his many years as a guide in and around Northern Arizona to focus on the following topics: role of tour guides, managing and training tour guides, industry trends, understanding group dynamics, dealing with delicate topics & questions, how to ask for a tip, and avoiding disasters.

Lessons from the Grand Canyon - Session Two

Presenter: Dr. Rich Holtzin, aka "Dr. Rich", Retired Grand Canyon Field Institute, Part-time Faculty Yavapai College & NAU, Seasoned Guide

Dr. Rich has spent thousands of hours in and around the Grand Canyon. Learn how to be a better guide through stories that will both advise and teach. You will develop skills to better read your audience, tell stories, and communicate with others.

Making Memories - Session Three

Making memories is essential to being the best guide you can be. The memories are truly what the client expects. Learn from Jenny about selling "the brand", promoting the company and yourself, networking with other tour guides to increase revenue, and connecting with clients to build lasting impressions. Photographer Larry Hendricks will provide the necessities of using a digital device to capture the best pictures, considering lighting, composition, subject. Note: Session Three will run for 2 full hours.

International Visitors in Small-Town America - Session Four

Thursday, October 15, 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Presenter: David Huang, President Chinese Host Destinations

Understanding the cultural differences of clients from other countries will allow you to provide the optimum experience. David Huang will share trends in international visitation and how to maintain strength of product while making it presentable to international visitors.

Geology & History of Northern Arizona - Session Five

Tuesday, October 20, 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Clients are eager to hear all about the amazing geology and history of our area, learn how to "sell rocks" by knowing just enough to "Wow" them! This session will look at the Colorado Plateau/Grand Canyon formation - the canyons, plateaus and vast expanses. Dr. Rich will delve into the first Spanish explorers, John Wesley Powell and Martin Litton. In addition, you will learn how to respond to questions when you do not know the answer and where to find resources.

Keeping Your Clients Safe - Session Six

Thursday, October 22, 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Presenter: Fran Thomas, Lake Powell Training and CCC American Heart Association Instructor

The final session will teach you what you need to know to keep your clients safe by planning ahead and being prepared. The session will introduce elements of emergency preparedness in the wilderness and what to do until professional help arrives. Guidance for keeping clients safe during COVID-19 and the essentials of what to carry with you will also be covered. Opportunities for CPR and BLS training through CCC will be available to all participants.
