Comet Talk - Crossing to the Other Side: Memorial Plaques of Navajo Bridge
Join us at CCC's Page Center or via Zoom for this Comet Talk!
Navajo Bridge is home to a dozen memorial plaques that can provide unique glimpses into local history of the Colorado River and nearby Lee's Ferry. All will be discussed during this presentation. The first plaque was installed in 1952 for the Colorado River runner Norm Nevills and his wife Doris. Several other plaques for river runners followed, including Gilbert Hanson, and Lovie Reiff. The family of John D Lee installed a large marble marker in his honor in 1961; the apparent bullet marks on his monument testify to the controversy still evoked among some to this day. On the eastern side of the Bridge are two plaques commemorating Navajos from the Bodaway Chapter, representatives of the Navajo Land on which the eastern end of the Bridge sits. The Bridge of course is its own memorial as well and will be included in the discussion.
Kern Nuttall is a retired chemical pathologist who lives with his wife Cindy Stafford in Page, Arizona, selected for many hiking and camping opportunities in northern Arizona and southern Utah. In their retirement, both enjoy exploring the history of the local area. Kern is the author of In a Better Place: Cemeteries & Graveyards of Grand Canyon, which includes the small cemetery at Lee's Ferry.
