Lunar Mapping: Then & Now

The Lunar Legacy Lecture Series is a FREE 18-month speaker series that celebrates the Apollo Moon Missions and Flagstaff's critical role in these historic lunar landings. Join us at 6 p.m., the second Wednesday of every month at the Coconino Community College Lone Tree Campus, 2800 S. Lone Tree Road, Flagstaff. Parking at this event is FREE. No RSVP necessary.

The Wednesday, October 10 lecture will provide insights into Flagstaff’s role in supporting the pioneering endeavors from mapping the moon to providing simulated moonscapes for astronaut training, preservation of historical artifacts, and the continued world-class research occurring in Flagstaff and Arizona surrounding lunar and space exploration. #FLGLunarLegacy

From drawings done meticulously by hand to complex digital graphics, lunar cartography has changed dramatically with the advancement of technology. A panel of scientists from the Apollo era and the present will discuss their experiences with creating lunar maps and show how this has changed through the years. Panelists include: Tent Hare, USGS; Jim Skinner, USGS; Mark Robinson, ASU, and Ray Jordan, USGS retiree.
