Executive in Residence
Ali has more than 17 years of broad-based marketing, sales, and business development experience. Prior to joining the college in 2018, as the first Executive in Residence for Marketing and Community Engagement, Ali worked as Vice President of Business Development for a Flagstaff-based biotechnology start-up and was part of the management team that guided the company through the IPO and product commercialization. She’s also worked as the business development and marketing director for a multi-million dollar commercial contracting company. Ali started her career as a sales and marketing manager for a Fortune 1000 IT company in Los Angeles. At CCC, Ali oversees the marketing and public relations department as well as driving community engagement through partnerships with local businesses and organizations. She is an involved community member who serves on the Coconino County Workforce Development Board, is an FMC Certificate Holder, alumni of the Flagstaff Leadership Program, and serves on the advisory board of the Economic Collaborative of Northern Arizona. She also helps guide the Flagstaff Women’s Leadership Network and is an active volunteer for the Flagstaff Family Food Center. Ali is a magna cum laude graduate of Clemson University and a summa cum laude recipient of a MEd in Counseling from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Chief Innovation Officer/Vice President
Ron joined Coconino Community College in the summer of 2017. He oversees the IT department and is responsible for developing partnerships and enhancing innovative funding options for the college. Ron Hurle comes to CCC from the private sector and has served as an integral member of the senior executive staff at several organizations throughout his career. Working as Director, Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Information Officer for NCS Pearson, Intel, Grand Canyon Association and CalPERS his responsibilities included setting strategic direction through sound leadership and ensuring the organization achieved its mission, financial objectives, and ultimately added value to all stakeholders. Ron’s relationship to Coconino County was strengthened while he served as the Chief Operating Officer for the Grand Canyon Association. A non-profit partner to the National Park Service. "Living on the south rim of the Grand Canyon showed me the beauty of this County. I hope to always be a part of this region and contribute to both the protection of the land and development of educational opportunities for all citizens within the County."
Associate Vice President for Innovative Learning Solutions
Gonzalo Perez, PhD, is a young educator, passionate about his mission of making higher education available to all minority students. Professionally, Gonzalo is the Associate Vice Present of Innovative Learning Solutions at Coconino Community College and teaches various courses in Computer Science and Information Systems studies and his research interests include information security and biometrics. Prior to his career in academia, Gonzalo worked as a project manager with Nielsen Media Research in New York City working closely with top media companies such as NBC, HBO, Univision, and Viacom. He earned his Doctoral degree from Pace University (NY) in Applied Computing in 2015. Gonzalo looks forward to leveraging his experience and passion for education to the community of Coconino County and beyond!
Facutly Senate President and Math Faculty Member
Maya joined Coconino Community College as a full-time faculty member in 2010. She has been teaching math for over twenty years and has taught math at the elementary, high school, and college levels. Her focus as an educator is to make learning engaging, exploratory and relevant for the students. She currently serves as the President of the Faculty Senate. She earned her Master’s degree in mathematics from NAU in 2007 and her Bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a math emphasis in 1994.
Executive Assistant to the President
April manages the Office of the President and supports the District Governing Board and College Council. After completing an associate's degree in Administration of Justice at Coconino Community College in 2004, April went on to complete a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice and a bachelor's degree in Public Agency Service (emphasis in Public Administration) at Northern Arizona University in 2007. She also completed a master's degree in Administration (emphasis in Professional Writing) in May of 2015. All degrees were completed with the highest honors and April credits her success in education to the foundation she received from the amazing faculty and staff at Coconino Community College. Prior to coming to CCC, April served as Graduate Admissions Coordinator for the Graduate College and Administrative Associate for the School of Forestry for Northern Arizona University.
Executive Director of Human Resources
Dietrich Sauer joined Coconino Community College in 2017 as Executive Director of Human Resources and oversees the CCC Human Resources department. Prior to FUSD, Dietrich held positions in the private sector with several Fortune 500 organizations including Deckers Brands (the makers of Teva and Ugg Australia Footwear) as their E-commerce HR Leader; Deluxe Corporation (banking and small business services) as their Area Human Resources manager supporting manufacturing plants, distribution centers and customer service centers throughout North America; and Carson Industries (Plastics Manufacturer with seven global locations) as their Director of Human Resources. His passion is championing positive employee relations and encouraging employee engagement to make the College a best place to work and an employer of choice.
J. Nathaniel "Nate" Southerland
Nate joined Coconino Community College in May 2018. After earning his bachelor’s degree at Brigham Young University, Nate began his career teaching physics, chemistry, and jazz on the Navajo Nation and worked as a curriculum and content developer and an educational technologist after receiving a Master’s degree in International Rural & Community Development from Utah State University. He earned his PhD in Educational Leadership & Policy from the University of Utah, where he has taught courses in higher education governance, policy, and finance as an adjunct professor while working in academic and student affairs administration and teaching statistics at Salt Lake Community College for the last nine years. In addition to his love of teaching and learning and a graduate specialization in higher education leadership, Nate’s areas of research include adult learning theory, engagement and retention of adult students, and quantitative research methods. Although Nate was raised in Florida and his spouse in southern California, they both have deep ties to northern Arizona and New Mexico extending back several generations and are excited to be putting down roots in Flagstaff.
Executive Director of Institutional Advancement
Scott began his career as the Executive Director for the Northern Arizona District, American Cancer Society (ACS) and was later promoted to the Executive Director for Southern Arizona (ACS). He returned to Flagstaff as an account executive and was promoted to the sales manager role for NBC affiliate KNAZ TV. Scott owned and operated Talboom Advertising and Public Relations, a successful full-service advertising and public relations agency for nearly 17 years, where he created and managed an account list that billed more than half a million dollars at its peak. As the Executive Director of Institutional Advancement, Scott for is responsible for overseeing the management and growth of the Coconino Community College Foundation, a 501(c) (3) non-profit. Scott is a 1982 alumnus of Northern Arizona University with Bachelor of Science in Journalism/Advertising. He recently earned a Certificate in Fundraising Management (CFRM) from Indiana University.
Jami Van Ess
Executive Vice President
Jami oversees the operations of Accounting and Finance, Budgeting, Facilities and Security, Information Technology Services, Purchasing and Auxiliary Services, Registration and Enrollment Services, and Student Financial Aid and Veterans Services. Prior to joining the College in 1998, she was the Vice President for Administrative Services at Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon, Illinois. Jami received her Bachelor of Science degree in accountancy from Northern Arizona University and a master’s in business administration from the University of Phoenix. Jami is currently pursuing her doctoral degree from Grand Canyon University and expects to complete her degree in the Spring of 2019. She is a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Arizona.
