CCC students Kasey King and Deshawnte Cardenas check on available jobs at the Seasonal Job Fair Wednesday, Oct. 9.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Coconino Community College student Deshawnte Cardenas checked in with Coconino County’s Public Works Department and Rooftop Solar.

“I want to get some more money for college and work when I’m not in school,” he said.

He and classmate Kasey King visited the CCC Seasonal Job Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the Lone Tree Campus. Hundreds of students had the opportunity to visit booths by employers in the city and county looking for full-time and part-time workers.

Brian Francis, Program Manager Sr. at CCC, said a job fair is held during the fall and spring semesters. The events are meant to offer students more opportunities in seeking work and networking with potential future employers.

“I think it makes it easier for our students who are working or who have families,” Francis said of gathering all the employers in one location for the students. “It’s also a good opportunity for our faculty, especially Career and Technical Education, to make connections with employers in their programs.”

Cardenas, who is in the Construction Technology Management program at CCC, was looking for temporary construction, labor and maintenance jobs. He appreciated having all the employers in one location.

“I think it’s really helpful for the students,” Cardenas said. “It gives them a chance to see what’s available in the community.”

King, who is a CCC2NAU student who plans to study Forestry when he transfers, said he showed up, “to look and learn about what (employers) have. I’m trying to figure out how to make money for school again.”

King spent time visiting the Forest Service booth, and, like Cardenas, sought out some temporary construction positions as well.

Francis said that 32 different employers were represented at the job fair this semester. Among them were: Arizona Snowbowl, U.S. Forest Service – Flagstaff Ranger District, Tuba City Regional Healthcare Corporation, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, Rooftop Solar, Diamond Resorts International, Little America Hotel Grand Canyon Railway, LOU Corporation, City of Flagstaff, Arizona Department of Corrections, Winslow Indian Health Care Center, and many more.
