Rotary organizes Hunger Banquet at CCC

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. --The Flagstaff Rotary Club has announced that they will be hosting a hunger banquet at Coconino Community College Lone Tree campus Saturday, March 5th, from 6 to 8:00 pm.

“The hunger banquet concept has been successful in other parts of the country for over 20 years, but new to Flagstaff,” said Hunger Banquet organizer and President Elect of the Flagstaff Rotary Club Hilton Harris.

The event which is a fundraiser for local hunger related causes is unique in that all event attendees are randomly seated and served a meal representative of high-, middle-, or low-income areas of the world. Because the idea behind the event is to create a visual representation of the world distribution of resources, most attendees (about 70%) will sit on the floor and share a meager meal of rice and beans with those sitting around them. Some (about 20%) will be seated in chairs and eat a modest, one-plate meal. A few attendees (only about 10%) will be seated at fancy tables and receive a lavish meal. Live, culturally diverse entertainment by student performers from the Flagstaff Academy Leadership Program (FALA) and Coconino Community College Theater Performers, and guest speaker Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer Loretta Mayer PhD., of SenesTech Inc. further enhance the evening’s experience. FALA art students will also display art that is related to world hunger issues. The Rotary Club will also present its first ever “Rotary Humanitarian Awards”.  The Master of Ceremonies will be a representative from the big Talker Radio station.

The Hunger Banquet is designed to serve as both a fund-raising event and an opportunity for members of the Flagstaff community to think critically about the systems of inequity that permeate our world. Come prepared for an enjoyable as well as a thought-provoking evening. Proceeds from the event will be divided equally between The Flagstaff Family Food Center, St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance and Northern Arizona Food Bank to address local hunger issues.

Harris added, “Considering the challenges local businesses have faced during the recession, we are quite pleased that we have had such an outpouring of support from our sponsors including our Gold sponsor Findlay Auto Group and Silver Sponsors Neuro Surgical Specialists Nathan Avery, MD, and Bradley Nicol, MD. The law firm of Mangum, Stoops, Wall & Warden are also “Silver” Sponsors.

In addition, the Rotary Club has received Bronze Sponsorships from Northern Arizona Ear, Nose and Throat, P.C. Daniel Downs, MD & Nathan Tritle, MD, Loven Contracting Inc., Edward Jones agents Alyn Rumbold, Mark Frank and Sedric Cade, Alliance Bank of Arizona, Vora Financial Group, Coconino Community College, Guest Schutte, Cosper & Ledbetter CPA’s, Collins Irish Pub, The Foster Budwig Family, KCS Construction Services, Purina, Mountain Heart, Pioneer Title Agency, and Sunwest Bank.

Media Sponsors include: The Arizona Daily Sun, The Big Talker Radio Station, Overdrive Media & Print Services. In Kind Sponsors include: East Coast Deli, Fratelli’s Pizza, Flagstaff Family Food Center, Wal-Mart, Albertsons, Flagstaff Rotaract Club and Flagstaff Central.

Ticket Committee Chairman Greg Sampson said, “Thanks to the generosity of our many sponsors, we were able to keep ticket prices extremely low.”  Ticket prices are $5.00 for students, $10.00 for community members and $20.00 for a family (up to 6 family members). Tickets can be purchased from any Rotary member, Alliance Bank at 224 Birch Street in downtown Flagstaff or online at
