Pinning ceremony celebrates first nursing class since accreditation

The President of Coconino Community College, Dr. Leah L. Bornstein welcomed all attending the eighth annual Pinning Ceremony at the CCC Lone Tree Campus Commons this Thursday, Dec. 16, saying that the nursing program is one of the crown jewels of all the programs at CCC and the ceremony itself, one of the most heartfelt of all celebrations at the College.

Director of Nursing Don Johnson, R.N., M.S., later addressed the crowd remarking that he is proud of the standards that CCC have set for the nursing program and that he was confident  that each of the graduating nurses will be an outstanding example of what a nurse should be.

Although CCC was founded in 1991, the nursing program has only been in existence since 2002. Since the start of the Coconino Community College Nursing program, the Arizona State Board of Nursing has frequently reviewed the success of the nursing students passing the National Council Licensing Examination –Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN)  as a measurement of the competency of the program instruction.  In cooperation with the Arizona State Board of Nursing, many revisions and additions to class content, syllabus rewritings, and program changes have occurred, all of which have increased the rigor of the program and increased the competency and success of students and leading to certification of the program.

The State Board of Nursing assures that standards of practice are met and that persons engaged in the practice of nursing are competent. It approves individuals for licensure, registration and certification, approves educational programs for nurses and nursing assistants, investigates complaints concerning licensee's compliance with the law, and determines and administers disciplinary actions in the event of proven violations of the Nurse Practice Act.

Student Speaker Russell Cormier delivered a humorous speech before nurses were pinned during a candle lighting ceremony signifying their transition into the nursing profession.
