Benning Tieke: Part-time faculty of the year 2012-13

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Benning Tieke, who teaches Spanish at Coconino Community College, was recently named Part-time Faculty of the Year for 2012. He enjoys working at CCC, and names the people and the opportunities his favorite part of working.

“CCC is so full of life, energy, and hope,” Tieke said. “At CCC, students recognize that education is a blessing, not an inherited right. This brings a desire and vision for the future.”

Tieke has taught all levels of Spanish classes at CCC, but is currently teaching Spanish 201 and 202.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Tieke lived in Germany, Mexico and a few other states because his family moved around for his father’s job. Tieke graduated from high school in Cincinnati and then attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he received his bachelor’s degree in political science. He was inspired by his upbringing to study political science and used his love for different cultures and his vast experiences to his advantage.

Tieke later received two master’s degrees, one in political science and one in Spanish education at Northern Arizona University. He completed much research on the intersection of politics and language. He understands through first-hand experience that politics and definitions of culture can vary based upon language and location.

Tieke takes advantage of the outdoor activities available when living in Flagstaff and loves cycling, hiking and skiing. His childhood led to a love for travel and different cultures. He discovered at an early age that, “There’s a big world out there, and we have much to learn.”

Tieke has visited 15 countries, not including the United States and 47 out of the 50 states. He uses photos from his travels in his classes, which helps add a dimension of real-world experiences. He is also active in politics and the community.

“If we are not developing our community, we do not have a sense of place,” Tieke said.
