Providing guidance to CCC students

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Derik Yellowhair was recently hired as Coconino Community College’s Student Life and Passages Coordinator.

As the Passages coordinator, Yellowhair works with single parents or displaced placed homemakers to provide guidance as the students work their way through classes.

Yellowhair has experience working in a grant program, which is what Passages is, because before coming to CCC, Yellowhair worked for Yavapai College in Prescott, most recently in the Veterans Upward Bound Trio program.

Yellowhair served in the US Marines Corps from 2000-2004 and did a tour in Iraq in 2003. “It was an interesting time,” Yellowhair said.

The other part of Yellowhair’s job is working with Student Life and serving as an academic advisor.

“That’s the fun part of my position because when I was in college in was always involved in student clubs,” he said. “I enjoy working with students as they plan events throughout the year.”

Yellowhair is originally from Kayenta and said he looks forward to life in Flagstaff. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Arizona State University and a master’s degree in Education from Northern Arizona University.

“Everyone here has been supportive and friendly and willing to help with my transition here,” Yellowhair said.
