In the Spring of 2004, The Coconino Community College proposed the Learning College Modules as part of a larger proposal to provide ongoing professional development and incentives for CCC associate faculty. These learning modules were built so that CCC teachers could make use of them in anyway that is useful to them. You and your department chair may decide which modules are most useful to you. A teacher may take the core block of modules (1unit), the intermediate block of modules (1 unit), the applied block of modules (1 unit), or mix an match which modules would most benefit you with the approval of the your department chair.
To access these modules you will need to provide your College ID number to Robin Rickli or a member of the TLC staff so that they can enroll you in the modules. The easiest way to do this is by emailing Robin at robin.rickli@coconino.edu, with your ID number and a request to view the modules. Once your enrollment has been verified you can find the web modules under my web CT in your course list. My web CT is accessed by going to the homepage, clicking on online courses and logging in to online courses with the @ sign and your college ID number. You will then type in your password. If you are taking the Learning Modules as a replacement for the EDU 250 you will need to meet with your Department chair to complete a contract on which modules you will be taking, a copy of this contract will need to be sent to Robin Rickli, Faculty Development Coordinator at robin.rickli@coconino.edu, who is administrating the modules. You may choose to take only one learning module for your own purposes or investigation, or choose to take the entire Learning College Program which is the equivalent of a 3 unit course. The Learning College Program has been organized into three blocks: The core block, the intermediate block, and the applied block. A descriptor of each of the modules can be found below along with a short directory of where to find certain key topic or information. These modules will be updated periodically and seek to provide both theoretical and local or applied knowledge specific to Coconino Community College.
Each module includes relevant content, useful links to additional resources, an open discussion, a self-assessment regarding module information or an assignment that applies the information in a way that is meaningful to you as an instructor. These assignments are published for your fellow instructors to view. To complete the entire CCC Learning College Program, you would take fifteen of the modules for the equivalent of 15 weeks. Below is a list of the modules and a brief description of each learning module's content.
The Core Module Block
The modules chosen as Core Learning Modules for The Learning College are considered to be important and relevant information for all Coconino Community College teachers. The current core modules are listed below, along with a description. Feel free to take any module in any order you like, keeping in mind what is the highest priority for you at this time. You also have the option of trading out some of these modules with the agreement of your department chair.
Basic College Teaching Skills
Focuses on the nuts and bolts of putting together a cohesive syllabus, designing a lesson plan, and provides interesting resources to make these beginning teaching tools more user or learner friendly. In this module you will learn to navigate Web 4 faculty, which allows you access your class rosters, post your FTSE roster and final grades, as well as learn how to access your college email account that you are required to monitor. This module is an excellent idea for all new CCC teachers, or those teachers revising their basic curriculum materials. (3 hours)
Classroom Management
Looks specifically at classroom management skills, including both fostering healthy classroom interactions, CCC policies and your rights and responsibilities regarding discipline issues, plagiarism, intermittent attendance, as well as guidelines regarding sexual harassment and appropriate responses to problem situations.(3 hours)
Teacher Resources
Focuses on the diverse resources available to Coconino Community College teachers. This module provides a listing of most if not all the resources currently available to CCC teachers and how to access or use these resources. This module explores support systems for CCC teachers such as the mentoring program, the Teaching and Learning Center, physical and online library materials .workshops. and support services provided by the Learning Enhancement Center. The most current Information regarding copyright restrictions and educational fair-use guidelines are also found in this module.(3 hours)
Classroom Diversity
Focuses on the numerous types of diversity you will encounter in the college classroom, and offers suggestions for responding to your diverse student population. Types of diversity found in the classroom include learning styles, socioeconomic differences, and cultural diversity. This module will be useful and relevant in some way to any teacher who teaches here at CCC. (3 hours)
Integrating Students with Disabilities
Looks specifically at teaching disabled students in a regular classroom setting. Describes the underlying philosophy regarding integrating students with disabilities into college classrooms, tracks the lines of responsibility regarding students with disabilities as well as the "Do's and Don'ts" of teacher/student interactions. It is extremely likely that every teacher at CCC will be asked to accommodate a student with learning disabilities in to their classroom. (3 hours)
The Intermediate Learning Module Block
The modules chosen as Intermediate Learning Modules for The Learning College contain both theoretical and local information for Coconino Community College teachers. The current intermediate modules are listed below, along with a description. Feel free to take any module in any order you like, keeping in mind what is the highest priority for you at this time. You also have the option of trading out some of these modules with the agreement of your department chair.
The Community College
Provides a historical overview of Community Colleges and Community College philosophy. Identifies the uniqueness of Community Colleges and examines the populations they serve as well as current changes they are going through. In addition to this overview, this module also looks at the status of community colleges in Arizona, and more specifically the history of our own Coconino Community College. This module is valuable to any teacher interested in teaching for the Community College system. (3 hours)
Beginning Instructional Technology
Provides the necessary skill set and information regarding access to and the operation of in classroom technology including power point and overhead projectors, computer access, smart board, VCR and DVD machines, ITV (Interactive Television). This module also provides a basic orientation for any CCC teacher who plans to teach, or may teach at some time in the future, a web or web enhanced class. A good class for any teacher who will be using any of these tools or who may need to provide support for their students using these tools. (3 hours)
Assessing Learning
Examines the various ways in which colleges, schools, departments and disciplines are going through the process of assessing their overall success. Primary methodologies involve assessing whether or not the goals and competencies outlined on course outlines and syllabuses are actually being met. Since assessment is becoming increasingly linked to the process of accreditation and the overall political climate that sets the funding for educational institutions is has become a powerful and important topic to address for all college instructors. (3 hours)
The Learning College
Provides literature regarding the Learning College concept. Discusses the ways in which colleges may apply this concept within their institutions and how Coconino Community College might integrate this concept in their policies and in the classroom. Coconino Community College is currently considers the principles of a Learning College to be central to their identity. Discussion regarding these principles and how they may be applied is an ongoing challenge for the college. Interesting module for any teacher concerned with CCC's larger mission statement and educational direction.(3 hours)
Advising and Articulation (under construction)
Provides basic information regarding guiding CCC students academically and transfer requirements for CCC students. Gives a broad overview of Gen Ed course options at CCC, as well a guide to coursework for particular majors. This module also investigates the equivalency standards and procedures that are used to insure a course is portable or transferable to another college or university system. (3 hours)
The Applied Learning Module Block
The modules chosen as Applied Learning Modules for The Learning College contain specific applied methodologies for Coconino Community College teachers. The current applied modules are listed below, along with a description. Feel free to take any module in any order you like, keeping in mind what is the highest priority for you at this time. You also have the option of trading out some of these modules with the agreement of your department chair.
Web CT Vista Training
Provides hands on instruction in working with Web CT Vista Online design and instruction under the guidance of a member of the Teaching and Learning Center staff at CCC. You may make a personal appointment with John Kofonow or other member of the TLC or attend a pre-scheduled group training session. Hands on training is invaluable for anyone attempting to web enhance their course or teach online. ( 3 hours)
Engaging Learners (under construction)
Provides various techniques and materials specifically for teachers to engage students in active learning. Departs from the students as an audience model. This is a great module for teachers who are creating or reevaluating their materials to be involve more student participation in the learning process. (3 hours)
Collaborative Learning
Examines collaborative learning methods and cooperative learning. Identifies best practices and strategies regarding collaborative learning and group work. Also investigates the benefits and difficulties in the peer editing process. Provides specific strategies to assess individual growth within collaborative learning activities. (3 hours)
Course Proposal (under construction)
Provides an overview of the process of course proposal, as well as the justification guidelines and necessary forms you will be working with. Walks you through the required steps and criteria for this process, as well as provides a brief training in some of the new systems being used by CCC. (3 hours)
Discipline Specific Topics (under construction)
Looks at discipline or department specific topics that are currently relevant and timely in your field of study. These will also be rotating modules. (3 hours)
General Ongoing Discussion
On the homepage is a discussion board in which teachers may post their thoughts and ideas for additional resources and materials as well as ideas for additional learning module topics. The discussion board will be regularly reviewed by the Faculty Development Coordinator who is responsible for revising and updating the Learning College Modules.
