Using Abridged WebDewey - Classification Using Abridged WebDewey online we can find our choices for the classification number. The main subject heading (listed 1st in your record) is the basis for choosing the classification number. As an example, let's return to the subject search for evolution. After logging in to Abridged WebDewey, click on Browse. To search for a classification number for the subject of evolution, enter the term evolution choosing Relative Index (to Dewey). Click on Browse at the bottom of the screen. See the 1st image. The second image shows the results. Notice the choices for classification numbers on the right side. We will have to explore each of these and determine which number best fits the item. The list on the left is from the Relative Index of Dewey Decimal Classificaiton and are NOT lists of subject headings. The most relevant heading to our book in the Index is Evolution--humans. (Notice there is also a further explanation by clicking on Manual at 476.8 vs. 560). The 3rd image shows the screen after clicking on 599.93 (evolution--human). Notice the blue bar at the top displays the classification number and heading. Under the blue bar is the heirarchy of the classification allowing the cataloger to see if this number "fits" for the item. If we were not sure of this number, we could continue to explore other classification numbers about evolution. We will accept this classification of 599.93 and build the Cutter number so we will have a complete call number. Using the LC Cutter table, for the author's last name of Diamond, D will be the first letter. D is a consonant, so we use the (4) section. The letter i is the second letter and according to the chart, i is represented by the number 5. If it is our cataloging decision that we always use 2 numbers plus the first letter for Cutter number, we must find the number to represent a. Any number after the second letter requires the use of section (5). Letters a-d are represented by the number 3. Our Cutter number for the author Diamond is D53. The call number is the classification number plus the Cutter number, i.e. 599.93 D53. We see again the necessity of the cataloger fully understanding the content of the item when assigning a classification number. Go to the Cataloger's Tools and login to complete the assignment below. You can also use the Help button in the Abridged WebDewey site. Be sure you have "chosen" Browse Abridged WebDewey before clicking on Help or you will get instructions for regular WebDewey which does not include Sears. Remember to logoff by using top right hand logoff button so that other students can use this tool. See the last image. The Cataloger's Tools page includes a link to LC Cutter Table. Assignment: Find the correct classification and Cutter number(carry out to 2 numbers) for items with these subject headings and authors. See example of completed assignment. |
