Feature Stories CCC honors All-Arizona Academic Team
Eric Borst and Elizabeth (Betsy) Hale will represent CCC on the 1999 All-Arizona and All-USA Academic Teams. Team members were selected for outstanding academic achievement, leadership accomplishments and service to the community. Each of the state's community colleges can submit nominations for the program which is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year college students; USA Today; and the American Association of Community Colleges. Borst, 36, is a business administration major who plans to increase his knowledge base and skills to advance his career. Borst is currently assistant to Jami Bradley, CCC's vice president for administrative services. He said he is honored to be named to the All-Arizona Academic Team. After graduating from CCC, he plans to transfer to Northern Arizona University to pursue a business degree. He hopes to work in international finance and travel around the globe. Hale, 45, is a pre-nursing major who plans to seek a B.S. in Nursing at NAU. She says she is elated to be named to the team. "It means a great deal to me since I did not do so well in college the first time around years ago." She also says CCC has prepared her for her academic future. "(CCC) has been a nurturing, encouraging environment where I have received a good foundation in the sciences and humanities that can now be built upon at the university level." The All-Arizona Academic Team will be honored during a luncheon for their families and State Legislators Feb. 18 at Mesa Community College. Students who make the first, second, and third teams will receive an Arizona Board of Regents Transfer Scholarship, which is a tuition waiver for two years at any of the three Arizona universities. High school students explore the tourism and hospitality field
More than 240 northern Arizona students and teachers participated in the first annual Tourism and Hospitality Fair held at the Radisson Woodlands Hotel. The goal of the November 2 event was to allow students to view and interact with Flagstaff professionals in the hospitality field. Students learned first-hand about the many career paths the industry offers. Ann Stires, Tech Prep Coordinator for CCC, was one of the co-planners of the Fair. "It was a wonderful opportunity for students to meet and interact with people in the hospitality and tourism industry," Sires said. Students began the day by touring different hospitality and tourism businesses and meeting with various professionals. The industry was represented by an array of professionals from fields such as a travel agency, the airport, park services and hotel managers. "Students got a broad view of the industry," Stires said. For the remainder of the day students and business professionals sat down for round table discussions and a keynote speech from Northern Arizona University's Head Basketball Coach Ben Howland. CCC conducted its own round table discussion to inform students about CCC, the Hotel Restaurant Management program offered at the college and other occupational programs related to the hospitality field. Round table discussions allowed the students the opportunity to ask questions and take an interactive role in the fair. Teachers and counselors were pleased the professionals took time to share their experiences and knowledge with the students. "The response to the conference was just wonderful," Stires said. "Over 30 businesses were willing to participate and give their time." |
