Board Takes Action on Governance,

Tuition and Dispatcher Academy

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Coconino Community College District Governing Board has approved a new policy and procedure for the college that embrace the philosophy of shared governance. That action was taken at the board’s regular monthly meeting Wednesday, Feb. 20 on the Lone Tree Campus.

Board members approved a tuition increase of $8 per credit hour that will take effect for the 2008 fall semester. A tuition cap will remain in effect that holds the price of tuition at the same rate for students taking 13 to 18 credit hours. That cap would be $910 per semester.

In other action, board members approved a new certificate program to create a Dispatcher Academy for state public safety employees.

They also heard a presentation from the Northern Arizona Intergovernmental Public Transit Authority about five propositions that will impact the future of Mountain Line bus service. On the May 2008 ballot, voters will be asked to approve a transit sales tax that would ensure the existence of the service, extend transit service to high traffic and under-served areas and replace old diesel buses with hybrids.

NAIPTA General Manager Jeff Meilbeck said Mountain Line ridership has grown from 131,000 riders in 2001 to 800,000 in 2007. “Public transit is part of an affordable living solution,” he said. If all five propositions are approved, voters would pay a 12-cent sales tax per every $100 purchase.

The board also heard about a developing tactical plan that will set the vision for the college’s technology through 2013. Chief Information Officer David Hakanson said several core operations and infrastructure improvements have been made and, for the first semester ever, Tuba City has ITV services this semester.

The next District Governing Board Meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 26 on the Lone Tree Campus.

Nestlé Purina Steps In for Step Up Scholarship

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Nestlé Purina Petcare Company is joining Flagstaff Mayor Joe Donaldson, the mayor’s mother Mary Donaldson, Pine Canyon Club, and Juvenile Court Services to provide Coconino Community College scholarships for young people associated with the Coconino County Juvenile Court system.

Nestlé Purina officials are planning to present the CCC Foundation – the fundraising branch of the college – a giant check for the Step Up Scholarship at

2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19 at the Nestlé Purina Petcare Company Flagstaff plant.

“On behalf of Nestlé Purina, we’re just excited that we are able to help in this request from Coconino Community College and the scholarship fund,” said Nestlé Purina Plant Manager Bill Calloway. “We look at ourselves as good corporate citizens of Flagstaff and this is a great way for us to contribute.”

The idea of the scholarship came out of a discussion with the college, the mayor and juvenile court representatives about how to help potential students receive an education, students who might otherwise not have the opportunity.

“We were looking for something that could give these individuals direction and meaning in their lives and help them to become responsible and successful citizens,” said CCC Foundation Director Robert Erb.

Nestlé Purina’s $5,000 gift brings the total Step Up Scholarship funding to $40,000.

“The support of this scholarship opportunity is another example of a community caring about each other and making a difference in the lives we touch as a community,” said Mayor Donaldson. “We will touch one who will touch another, and so on.”

CCC to Purchase Green Power

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Coconino Community College is joining some of the county’s largest power users who are committing to purchasing a portion of their power from renewable energy sources.

CCC is part of the Northern Arizona Renewable Energy Purchasing Group that is signing a Memorandum of Understanding at noon today, Tuesday, Feb. 5 at Northern Arizona University’s Applied Research and Development Building. The NAREG group includes APS, the City of Flagstaff, Coconino County, Flagstaff Medical Center, Flagstaff Unified School District and NAU among other public and private organizations.

NAREG members are expressing their intent to sign large-scale contracts with the APS Green Choice program to pay a premium for renewable energy. CCC has committed to purchase a minimum of 5 percent of its power from green energy, a cost of about $2,000 per year.

The idea behind the program is to increase total demand until it reaches a point that it will become cost-effective for APS to sign a Power Purchase Agreement with one or more local renewable energy generating facilities and make renewable energy purchasing more affordable for consumers.

CCC already implements sustainable practices such as using natural day lighting throughout the Lone Tree Campus, low pressure sodium parking lot lighting, waterless urinals, native plant and rock landscaping and recycled wood products. In addition, the college recycles 90 percent of all its trash in a partnership with the City of Flagstaff.

“Sustainable practices have been very important to the college, especially since the planning phases of the Lone Tree Campus facility,” said CCC Facilities Director Mark Easton. “The building is extremely energy efficient, which keeps operating costs down and makes a statement about how the college community values and protects the environment.”

NAREG evolved from the Coconino County Sustainable Economic Development Initiative. Today’s action is the culmination of nearly a year of discussions among the NAREG participants.
