Lone Tree Campus Hosts Two Free February Concerts
Free Piano and Cello Recital has Russian Flair
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- A free recital, featuring the piano and cello is scheduled for 7p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21 at the Coconino Community College Lone Tree Campus. CCC music instructor and pianist Chase Coleman and Flagstaff conductor and cellist Sean Rivera-Mills will be performing music from 19th and 20th century Russian composers. “Russian music is notable for its beautiful melodies and rich deep harmonies and textures,” Coleman said.
Coleman has performed solo piano recitals, concerti, duo recitals and jazz gigs around the world.
While in high school, he won the Performers of Connecticut Competition and the New York State Music
Teachers’ Guild Auditions which led to a performance at Carnegie Recital Hall. Since then, Coleman has appeared
as a classical soloist with orchestras in New England, Colorado, Arizona and California. “I always hope that the people
who come to hear me play will be able to step outside of themselves and into the ‘sound worlds’ that the different
composers create, have an uplifting emotional experience or just be entertained,” he said. Rivera-Mills has performed
as a cellist and conductor in California, Oregon, Arizona, Iowa, Nevada, Switzerland, France, Germany and Austria. He
has been a member of many ensembles and founded the Flagstaff Light Opera Company. Currently he is the Verde
Valley Sinfonietta music director.

“I don’t think people really realize what they’ve been missing until they sit in front of an acoustic big band with 18 people in front of you,” says Dimensions in Blue band leader and saxophone player Richard Baum. It’s an amazingly powerful band. It could be very intimate or it could be nailing you to the wall with sheer power and energy.”
To recreate the day of Glenn Miller, Dimensions in Blue promises to put audiences In the Mood with a wide variety of music ranging from the classics of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Woody Herman to the more contemporary sounds of Rob McConnell, Bob Mintzer and Frank Mantooth.
Baum says the band will be offering big band history in reverse starting with modern music that you’d hear at a jazz festival, then adding music from the Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., generation and then moving to the sounds of the swing bands and groups that came out of Dixieland. “It is a segment of America’s music that has been around so long and appeals to a wide range of people. That’s what I find most interesting about it.”
“This band is top shelf -- as good as any big band we have today,” says retired U.S. Air Force Bands Chief and DeMiguel School Principal Bill McCamley. “These are fabulous musicians and I would encourage everyone, especially children and young adults to see this show to truly appreciate and understand our American heritage.”

Artwork on Exhibit at Lone Tree
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Art faculty members are inviting all to a reception this afternoon from 5 – 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 26 in the Lone Tree Commons. They will be displaying drawings, paintings, glass and ceramics. Refreshments will be served.
Also, all are invited to visit an art students’ exhibit across from room 536 on the Lone Tree Campus.
