Exhibit to Dye For – Reception This Evening

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Colorful painted, rusted, dyed and stitched silk, cotton, rayon and other textiles are draped across the Coconino Community College Lone Tree Campus Commons in Surface: Layered, a national juried exhibit of two and three dimensional fiber arts, tapestries, quilts and sculptures.

The exhibit features the work of nationally recognized and famous fiber artists such as Margaret Cusack, known for her appliqué techniques. An artists’ reception is scheduled from 5 – 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 29 in the Lone Tree Commons. The reception and the exhibit are free and open to the public.

“The interesting designs and textures can’t help but draw you in and open your mind to the world of fiber and textile art,” said CCC Visual and Performing Arts Presenter Sydney Francis. “A lot of the works are unexpected and are on the cutting edge of contemporary fiber media.”

Surface: Layered is being exhibited in conjunction with the Surface: Layered Symposium, a series of fiber arts workshops and presentations from July 28 – Aug. 1.  The non-credit workshop series features color mixing for dyes, printing on silks and creating designs on textiles, and offers classes for all levels of textile art students.

“Surface design is an up and coming medium in the art world using fabric and dyes instead of canvas and oil paint,” said textile designer and fabric artist Melanie Testa. “I was very excited about the selections that we got in. I didn’t know what caliber of work we would be getting and I have to say we got top caliber and international quality.”

The Surface: Layered exhibit will be on display through August 14. For workshop information, log on to www.coconino.edu or contact the Community Enrichment Center at 928-526-7644.
