515.1    DISABILITY RESOURCES PROCEDURE

 

            515.1.1    STUDENT ELIGIBILITY

Eligible students with disabilities will receive support services from Disability Student Resources.  Students are responsible for contacting Disability Resources to request services.

 

            515.1.2    DEFINITIONS

A “person with a disability” as defined by “The Americans With Disabilities Act,” and “The Rehabilitation Act of 1973" is “someone who:

            1.      Has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities including functions such as:

 

                     A.       Caring for one’s self

                     B.       Performing manual tasks

                     C.       Walking

                     D.       Seeing

                     E.       Hearing

                     F.        Speaking

                     G.       Breathing

                     H.       Learning and

                     I.         Working

 

            2.      Has a record of the disability or

 

            3.      Is regarded as having the disability.

 

            515.1.3    ELIGIBILITY FOR PARTICIPATION PROCEDURE

            Each student with a disability, as defined previously, must:

            1.      Meet Coconino Community College admission requirements.

 

            2.      Provide the Disability Resources Program Coordinator with medical, psycho-educational, psychological, psychiatric, or other appropriate diagnostic evaluation as requested, to document the nature and extent of the disability.  This documentation must be dated within three (3) years of the date the student is requesting services for the first time.  (This documentation must be on file before the student receives any services other than pre-admission counseling or advisement.)

 

            515.1.4    PERSONAL CARE

1.      A disabled student who requires the assistance of a personal care attendant is responsible for arranging that assistance.  Coconino Community College does not provide personal care attendants.

 

            2.      Disability Student Resources will provide information and referral materials to resources in the community for personal care attendants.

 

            3.      The student is responsible to recruit, hire, train, compensate, and terminate a personal care attendant.

 

            515.1.5    ACCOMMODATIONS

1.      Students with disabilities must contact Disability Resources at the time of registration regarding particular classroom and laboratory accommodations needed.  Examples of accommodating students with disabilities include, but are not limited to, providing readers, scribes, note-takers, interpreters, and special testing arrangements; allowing the use of tape recorders in the classroom; providing adapted course materials and course requirements; providing alternative print formats; and providing qualified lab aides.  Qualified lab aides are persons deemed qualified by the discipline coordinator.

 

2.      Classroom laboratory accommodations, including laboratory assistance and specialized adaptive equipment, or reasonable accommodations are provided to students who are blind, visually impaired, or physically disabled.  Students must notify Disability Resources of their accommodation needs.  Reasonable accommodations that do not cause undue hardship to the College will be considered.

 

3.      Laboratory assistants may provide assistance in completing laboratory assignments as directed by the student.  The laboratory assistant is not a source of information for the student.

 

4.      In order to request accommodations of Coconino County Community College, a disabled student should utilize the following procedure:

           

                     A.   The student will register for classes during advance registration, whenever possible.

                     B.   The student will contact Disability Resources to request accommodations at least eight (8) weeks in advance whenever possible.

         C.   Disability Resources will facilitate appropriate, reasonable accommodations.

 

            515.1.6    TUTORING SERVICES

Disability Resources will attempt to provide student-worker tutors, whenever possible, to disabled students attending Coconino County Community College in developmental and academic English and Mathematics courses.

            1.      The student will request tutoring services from the Disability Resources Office.

 

            2.      The Disability Resources Program will coordinate the scheduling of tutoring services to disabled students.

 

            3.      Recruiting, training, and assessment of tutors will be performed by the Disability Resources Coordinator in conjunction with appropriate faculty and staff.

 

            515.1.7    RECORDING OF MATERIALS

            1.      As the need is determined by Disability Resources, student workers will assist students with disabilities who require recorded textbooks and materials in an alternative format by:

 

         A.      Facilitating the ordering and acquisition of recorded textbooks from Recordings for the Blind (RFB).

         B.      Recording portions of textbooks and class handouts on audiocassette.

 

 

2.      Disabled students requiring recorded materials for their classes should utilize the following procedure:

 

                     A.      The student will request assistance from Disability Resources.

                     B.      The student will supply material needing to be recorded, the title of books to be ordered from RFB, and audiocassettes to be used for recording.  These materials should be ordered as early as possible to ensure they are prepared in an orderly manner.

                     C.      The student will pay all fees required by Recordings for the Blind (RFB).

                     D.      Disability Resources will assist with processing applications to Recordings for the Blind.

                     E.      Disability Resources will recruit; train, and schedule volunteer readers to record material.

 

            515.1.8       INTERPRETING SERVICES

1.      Students who, due to a significant hearing impairment, need a sign language or oral interpreter may request this service from Disability Resources.

 

2.      Interpreters may be provided for classes, educational activities, and College-sponsored events for students, and potential students.  The need for interpreters for academic classes will take priority.  All interpreter requests will be processed through Disability Resources.  Requests are processed on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to currently enrolled students for academic needs.

 

3.      The College is responsible for funding interpreter services for students who are not receiving support from Vocational Rehabilitation.  Disability Resources will be responsible for interpreting whenever feasible or appropriate.  Disability Resources will hire, monitor, and arrange payment for qualified professional interpreters for student academic needs when necessary.

 

4.      Students in need of interpreting services will request services from Disability Resources as early as possible.

 

5.      The Disability Resources will coordinate and process requests.

 

            515.1.9       CONSULTATIVE SUPPORT

            1.      Disability Resources will provide consultative support to the College on issues dealing with accessibility.  Situations dealing with facility and classroom accessibility will be referred to the ADA representative when appropriate.

 

            2.      To ensure program accessibility, facilities do not necessarily need to be physically accessible to disabled individuals.  However, the class or activity conducted in that facility must be accessible.  For example, this can be achieved by moving the classroom setting to a different building or adapting course requirements to allow maximum participation of disabled students. 

 

            3.      Faculty, staff, students or other individuals may report student accessibility difficulties to the Disability Resources Program Coordinator.

 

            4.      The Special Needs Coordinator, with the Americans with Disabilities Act representative, will coordinate appropriate actions to remove barrier(s) to accessibility.
