CONTRACTUAL LOADING REQUIREMENTS

470.1.1       Purpose

The purpose of the loading requirements procedure is to ensure that loading expectations are clear and equitable and that the quality of program delivery in the classroom is constantly maintained.

470.1.2       Faculty Assignments

The Vice President of Academic Affairs in conjunction with the Deans may assign a full-time instructor to teach at any campus/site/extension within the District during the contract year which best utilizes the instructor's teaching/academic talents and skills in meeting the College's mission.

470.1.3       Full-Time Faculty Loads

Full-time faculty shall be accountable for 30 load hours of teaching and release time responsibilities per academic year, as assigned by the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

With prior approval from the Dean an instructor may teach less than or more than 15 load hours per semester provided that the instructor teaches a total of 30 load hours in the academic year.

The three week May mini-session is part of the previous Spring semester and the three week August pre-session is part of the following Fall semester.

470.1.4       Full-time Faculty Hours per Week

Full-time faculty have a minimum weekly accountability of 40 hours.  The workweek normally consists of 15 hours of in-class teaching time, 15 hours of preparation for teaching and 10 hours of on-campus duties.  On-campus duties include office hours (five hours), meetings, advising and other related tasks.

470.1.5       Full-time Faculty Duty Days

Full-time faculty are accountable to work 169 duty days in an academic year.  A schedule of duty days is established annually by the Director of Human Resources and does not include Spring Break or the Holiday Break in December.

470.1.6       Overload

Any load in excess of 30 hours in an academic year will be paid at the prevailing overload rate.  Overload payments normally begin on the first pay date in March.

In the event a class is canceled due to low enrollment where a potential overload exists, the primary contractual load takes precedence and overload will not be granted.

Any exceptions to the 30 load hours per academic year requires written justification by the appropriate Dean in conjunction with the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

470.1.7               Release Time and Special Projects

Faculty members who are provided release time from teaching to perform other non-instructional special projects may teach a course on overload for extra pay with the approval of the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

One hour of release time is equal to two hours per week of non-instructional work assignment, for the duration of the release time activity.

Faculty members who accept special projects in addition to full time load may also be compensated with a stipend, at the discretion of the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

470.1.8       Associate Faculty Loads

Part-time faculty normally will not teach more than 9 load hours in each regular semester of employment.

During summer sessions part-time faculty will normally teach no more than 6 load hours per session not to exceed 12 load hours for all three sessions.

Exceptions may be made by the Dean and the Vice President for Academic Affairs, but in no case will loads above 12 load hours per semester and no more than 20 load hours for both fall and spring semesters be approved.  No more than one semester per fiscal year may be taught at a level greater than 9 load hours.

470.1.9               Associate Faculty Hours per Week

For purposes of determining hours worked per week, each load hour includes both an hour of classroom teaching time and an hour of out of class work, such as preparation for class, meeting with students, grading, etc.  Associate faculty work hours are set in order to meet the State requirements for part-time, non-benefit, non-retirement eligible employees.

470.1.10      Classified/Administrative/Professional Employees

Administrative/Professional (exempt) employees are encouraged to take or teach classes.  They may teach one class or one workshop each fall, spring, and summer session.  Compensation for teaching a class will be according to the associate faculty pay schedule.

Based on the Fair Labor Standards Act full-time regular classified (non-exempt) employees are required to receive compensation at time and a half for working above 40 hours a week; therefore they are only eligible to teach if the total payment for the class can be demonstrated on an hourly basis to be equal to at least time and one half their normal hourly rate.

If any of the teaching assignment occurs during the employee’s normal workday it must be accommodated through a flexible scheduling arrangement, use of vacation time or leave without pay, as approved by the employee’s supervisor.

Employees who have teaching as part of their normal job descriptions will not receive additional compensation for teaching the classes that are defined as a job responsibility.
