Boundaries/Barriers
by Katie Huser
The cell membrane isolates the cell from its environment; and it serves many functions such as self-identity, protection, and regulation of molecules both in and out of the cell; and so do we in our own environment. Everybody has their own self-identity, protection, and regulation of "molecules" in and out of their lives. When we think of self-identity we think that no one out there is exactly like us. We all way we look. The way I dress is unique to me because there are things that I look for when I go shopping. I look for anything that is pink, anything that has hearts and anything that sparkles. Those three things are what distinguish me from everyone else. The music I like all depends on my mood sometimes I like to be a little crazy so I put on some hip hop and dance away. Other times I like to just relax and country music does that for me. If my music and the way I dress didn’t set me apart from everyone else then my looks do. I know for a fact that no one out there looks like me, we all have different fingerprints and DNA. However, self-identity is just one of many other functions of boundaries and barriers that reflect upon my life there is also protection.
Everyone has their own protection in their life. It may be self protection or protection that they have in their community. My self-protection is more like self defense, being a girl you have to look out for yourself all the time especially when you’re by yourself I have to always know my surroundings and if I’m in trouble I know who and what's around me when I call for help. I guess it helps when your parents both work for the Sheriff's department. The community I live in has people that I can count on to help me in many situations; for example the police men and women, the firefighters and the doctors. These people spend their whole lives trying to help people who are in need of help. Without these people every day in our lives then everyone wouldn't feel that they have any protection in their lives. Last but not least we have regulation of molecules that comes in and out of our cells.
Everyone takes care of their bodies in different ways. For the most part we eat things because it tastes good not because it's healthy for us. I admit I don't always eat things that are healthy for me; I try for a day but it never lasts long. The way we take care of our bodies and the things that we put in them are important because a healthy body is a healthy way of life.
In conclusion, the way we live our lives is similar to the way a cell membrane functions in our bodies. Well, maybe our cell membranes don't have to decide what to wear and the music they listen too; but they do deal with self-identity, protection, and the regulation of molecules just like we do.
