Tips for Success in online classes

Self-motivation and self-discipline are the keys to success for online classes. The online environment requires your commitment and a focus on responsibility to keep up with the course requirements noted in the course syllabus.

  • Familiarize yourself with the course design, syllabus, schedule, and class/institutional requirements for taking an online course.
  • Log into the course website on a regular basis. Be sure you know the 'required attendance policy' for your class. Regular attention to the website will allow you to be aware of course updates, conference postings, assignment updates, and messages requiring immediate attention.
  • Participate! Contribute your ideas, thoughts and comments and read your classmates. Use good communication skills. Remember that what you intended in an email message may not be what is perceived at the receiving end. Proofread your email messages for both grammar/spelling as well as 'intended meaning.' Remember that the Internet is a public place. Email is not a secure communications system.
  • Establish a study schedule for online participation. Stay in touch with your instructor, especially when you have questions. Do not hesitate to leave your instructor an email or telephone message.
