Teaching Students Who Have ADHD/ADD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Attention-Deficit Disorder (ADD)

ADHD: “A persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsively that is more frequent and severe than is typically observed in individuals at a comparable level of development.” (American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical manual, fourth revision {DSM-IV}).

ADD: Officially called Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.A neurologically based medical condition.It is a developmental disability with characteristics such as inattention, impulsivness, and sometimes hyperactivity.

These students may demonstrate mild to severe difficulties in one or more of the following areas:

  • Concentrating
  • Listening
  • Initiating and completing assignments
  • Organization of assignments
  • Making transitions
  • Interacting with others
  • Motivation to produce work throughout the semester
  • Organizing problems with multiple steps involved
  • Classroom accommodations (list not exhaustive):
  • Tape record lectures
  • Note taker
  • Extra test time
  • Private testing
