The Basic Rider Course (BRC) is the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s introductory motorcycle riding course. It is paced for beginners and satisfies the AZ State requirements to obtain a motorcycle endorsement should the student successfully complete the course.

The BRC gives the student an opportunity to learn proper methods at a measured pace in non-threatening, controlled conditions, guided by experienced Rider Coaches who have been trained and certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation to teach this curriculum.

This course in intended for students who have: (1) never been on a motorcycle; (2) some experience, but no training; (3) been long time (or long since) riders who want to refresh their basic riding skills.

The class requires approximately 5 hours of classroom and 11 hours of on-range riding time. Class schedule end times may vary depending on student progress.

The motocycle, gloves and helmet will be provided to the student to use during the course.

Upon successful completion of the BRC the student receives (1) a MVD Certificate of Completion that allows them to obtain a motorcycle endorsement on their drivers license and (2) a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course completion card which may entitle them to an insurance discount.

Flat Weave Tapestry Rug Techniques

This workshop is an introduction to tapestry techniques on the floor loom to produce weft-face rugs. Using interlock, turn lock, and slits, each student will weave arrangements of squares, crosses, stars, diamonds, vertical and horizontal lines. Tying Up Loose Ends

You will get a comprehensive look at finishes for different items and how to handle them aesthetically and effectively. The instructor will weave samples for all students that contain enough ends to tie seed knots, twisted fringes with different number of ends (spinning and plying simultaneously) to produce fringes that are exactly the correct length; even contoured. Learn a double, 7-strand braided finish with concealed ends. Add extra ends to make heavier fringes even though fewer warp ends actually exist. Borrow from adjacent threads to blend different colors and twist to give a variety of visual effects. All aspects of fringes and finishes will be addressed.

Using Dry Pigments with Watercolor and Acrylic

More new projects that supplement Joanne’s book, The Weaver’s Studio Rep Weave and Beyond, from Interweave Press, 2004, will inspire your creative spirit to take a new and different approach to an old technique. Use the theory and technique of Swedish ripsmatta (or Scandinavian rep weave). Previous rep weave experience is required. The instructor will furnish worksheets, warping instructions and other important information one month prior to the workshop and looms must be ready for weaving the first morning.
Daily activities include weaving, lecture and technical information.

Wood-Fired Ceramic Mural Project

Introduction to Outdoor Drawing

Color Mixing for Dyers

Dye the color you choose, not the color that chooses you! Explore the unlimited number of hues possible by mixing only pure reds, yellows, and blues of Procion MX dye. Teams of students will use different sets of primaries that when mixed will yield hundreds of colors in a wide range of values. Sharing the results, each student will build a sample book of more than 1,000 dye formulas on 100% cotton fabric. This book will become an invaluable reference for future dying. Using the sample book as a guide, each student will apply the basic techniques of dying, including dying value gradations, over-dying, and low water immersion techniques to do further explorations as time allows.

Direct Dye Painting and Composition

Explore design and composition with thickened dyes on cotton broadcloth and silk organza. Work in a small format using freezer paper and monoprinting and direct dye techniques to build a work of art while learning basic thickened dye techniques.

Creating Designs on Textiles

Learn everything you need to know about bringing digital images to fabric using an inkjet printer. Ideas and discussions in this workshop will include design, content, composition, personal style, color, suitability, surface selection, surface preparation, getting a quality print and many others.
Participants will print images and do small studies and projects. Some knowledge of photo program software is necessary. Knowledge of Photoshop Elements or Photoshop will be helpful.

Puttin’ on the Rips

Weave wonderful fabric for clothing using the same theory involved in ripsmatta (rep weave). A similar threading, used for placemats and table linens, is scaled down to produce dramatic handwoven fabric with loom-controlled ripsmatta images on the surface. Warps of unmercerized cottons; 8/2, 10/2, 12/2, 16/2, and 20/2 are set at 12 – 15 epi. Both thick and thin wefts are necessary to produce a rep weave pattern on the surface.
Students weave on their own 4 or 8-shaft looms threaded in four to eight-block designs with different wefts and tie-ups for maximum effect and design possibilities. Participants weave fabric for a vest or jacket, approximately 2-1/2 to 3 yards, or more. Emphasis will be placed on achieving a stable, flexible fabric suitable for clothing.
Students design their own warp with help from Joanne’s book, Rep Weave and Beyond, from Interweave Press, 2004.

Printing on Silks

The unique qualities of silk make it an ideal canvas for painting and printing. Watercolor, acrylic painters and fiber artists will find silk paints are very similar to these media. This workshop combines fine art printing techniques with fiber art and takes students beyond the basics of printing on fiber.
The workshop will begin with painting silk scarves to become familiar with silk and silk paints. Then the workshop will progress to painting on stretched silk, creating relief plates, and nontraditional printing techniques for fiber. Students will leave with a painted scarf, painted and printed silk and several printing plates that can be used to hand print, as well as extensive resources on the techniques used.

Hand-Dyed Fabric Extravaganza

Hand, kitchen, and sauna towels are the focus of this workshop. It is ideal for the patient, precise weaver who longs to weave fine towels in a variety of Scandinavian techniques. Information will be provided so that participants can warp, thread and tie-up their looms before the workshop begins.

Make a miniature book with the use of shrink-e-dinks. Use charms, glass beads, velum, leather cord, inks & rubber stamps to decorate your booklet.

Day 4, June 26: Crochet Away

Create your own unique necklace designs using wire, glass beads, charms and a crochet hook. Choose from a variety of colors of wire and beads.

Day 5, June 27: Fibers & Fun

Leather cord, wire, interesting fibers and beads come together to make lovely and fun-to-wear necklaces. Use Italian yarns to make a fluffy & fun one-of-a kind piece of art.

From Caveman to Rocket Science (full)

Day 1, July 7: Survival Skills

Make shelters, learn what to carry, signaling, fire basics and how to make fire without matches, knot tying, first aid, purifying water, knife safety-handling, sharpening, carving, map and compass.

Day 2, July 8: Plants

Make paper, carry out plant experiments & carrot cloning, identify parts of plants & different species, learn ethnobotany, prepare seed starts, ecology and more.

Day 3, July 9: Simple Rockets

Learn parts of a rocket and their function, make balloon rockets, alka-seltzer rockets, menthos and soda rockets, soda bottle rockets with parachutes and launch them.

Day 4, July 10: Self Defense

Practice rolling, punching, kicking (pads—not people), evading, escaping different types of grabs, blocking punches and kicks.

Day 5, July 11: Anasazi Hunting Skills

Make snares/traps, throw a rabbit stick, make a sling, atlatl, tracking, stalking and hiding games, edible wild animal foods walk, make a bull roar and play native fitness games.

If time allows, learn Anasazi Gathering Skills.

Make agave baskets with hand woven straps made from yucca rope and glue them together with pine pitch glue. Make a pair of tongs for gathering prickly pear fruit. Cook foods without steel pots. Learn how to make a deer figurine from bear grass.
