Jim Atkins

Jim has an MA in Psychology from Marshall University, Huntington, WV; He received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Oregon. His work history includes juvenile probation, school psychology, providing outpatient and inpatient mental health services mental health administration and private practice as a psychologist licensed in Oregon.

Jim has been a volunteer with the Salem (Oregon) Audubon Society, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service and the Albuquerque Museum. His interests include photography and birding, and he currently edits the newsletter for the Flagstaff Photography Club.

Jim assists with administrative support and ABE/GED instruction as a Volunteer at Coconino Community College's (CCC) 4th Street Campus.

He has been a volunteer with CCC since August 2006.

Stephany Brown

  Stephany is an ABE instructor at the Page campus

Greg Cross

Greg has a BFA in painting from Colorado State University with a minor in education.  His Master’s Degree is in Intercultural Management from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, VT.

Greg has worked in the field of education since 1981 when he began teaching elementary school in Ft. Collins, CO.  After two years as a teacher trainer with the Peace Corps in Liberia and two years teaching English in Japan he moved to Brattleboro to pursue a master’s degree.  His internship was completed with the White Earth Land Recovery Project on the White Earth Reservation in northern Minnesota and the subject of his thesis was Native American language renewal.

Following two years of AmeriCorps service in Colorado, he moved to Thoreau, NM to direct a family literacy program for a small non-profit organization.  He has also worked as professional development coordinator for the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy, conducted start-up activities for a Migrant Even Start program in Deming, NM and served as executive director of The Gathering Place in Thoreau.  Before joining CCC he served as interim director of adult education for Native Americans for Community Action from 2006 to 2007.

Greg likes to do things that start with the letter B including biking, brewing and bass playing.  He is the adult education program director for CCC.

Janice Dixon

Janice has a Master's in Ed., Community College Education from NAU and has served as a Resource Teacher for the Arizona Department of Education, Adult Ed Division for five years. 

She finds the students delightfully unique and challenging. Her current favorite hobby is watercolor painting.

Janice is an ABE/GED  instructor at the CCC LEARN Center at Northern Arizona University and

has been an employee of CCC since August of 2005. 

She has over 20 years of experience with Arizona adult education

Dorcas Greer

Dorcas has a B.A. Psychology from the University of California, Davis, a Teaching Certificate from San Franicsco State and an

M.A. in Applied Linguistics from NAU.

 

She is interested in multicultural education.

Dorcas quilts, knits, and reads a lot. She has a husband, 2 daughters, 4 dogs, and 1 cat.  She is a weekend gardener, and sings in the Methodist choir.

Dorcas teaches ABE/GED, English Language Acquisition for Adults at Williams Campus inWilliams, AZ.

 

She has been with Adult Education for two years.

Shirley Haswood

Shirley has B.S. and M.A. in Elementary Education She is
Certified in English as a Second Language; Navajo Bilingual; Reading; Standard Adult Education; Standard Elementary Education.

She believes that each adult in the Adult Education program can become a respectful, responsible and productive representative of their culturally rich community.

Shirley is an ABE/GED instructor at the Eagles’ Nest Intermediate School, Rm. T-5, Tuba City Unified School #15, Tuba City, Arizona.

She has been involved in Adult Education for several years.

Cheryl Jackson

Cheryl has her B.A. and M.A. in English.

She chose this field because she likes the people -.  Because the people in this area don’t typically have the 'traditional school' experience. "I have found that they have a certain open-mindedness and acceptance that I don’t see in other areas of education.  I really like this."

Cheryl's interests are walking/hiking, spending time with my family, and the French language.

Cheryl is the distance learning ABE/GED Instruction for Northern Arizona. Her home is in Flagstaff, AZ.

Cheryl has worked in Adult Education a total of 2 years: 6 months with Coconino Community College; a year and a half with the Coconino County Superintendent of Schools program; plus 1 year ESL tutoring at Pacific Union College.

Craig Lefever

Craig has a B.A. in Hummanities with a Classics emphasis from Northern Arizona University (NAU) and an M.A. in Teaching English as a Second or Other Language, also from NAU.

He truly enjoys teaching, especially to self-motivated students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

He enjoy collecting books and hiking in the mountains around Flagstaff with my dogs.

Craig teaches English Language Acquisition for Adults and ABE/GED primarily at Coconino Community College's 4th Street Campus. He also mentors the English language instructors at the CCC LEARN Center at NAU and the Family Resource Center.

Craig has worked two years in Adult Education.

Shanna Manny

Shanna has a M.Ed. in Counseling from NAU.

She has spent most of her career in some facet of the education field from instruction to grant writing. Shanna also teaches math at CCC as an associate faculty member.

She loves to ski and be outdoors. 

Shanna is responsible for Database Management, and is a Substitute Instructor - CCC LEARN Center at NAU. She has been working with Adult Education since December of 2004.

Paula Pluta

Paula Pluta, M.Ed.
University of Arizona: B.S. in Microbiology, B.S. in Medical Technology, M.Ed. in Higher and Health Education,

Nationally Certified Health Education Specialist, Arizona Certified Secondary Teacher in Biology, Chemistry and Health Arizona Certified Adult Education Teacher.

 

Have taught at University of Arizona, Pima Community College, Mountain View High School (Marana), Flagstaff High School , Sinagaua High School, FUSD Community Education and Coconino Community Collge

Currently Associate Faculty at CCC and Corespondence Faculty (Extended University) at University of Arizona.

Interests include running, biking, skiing, swimming, hiking, and backpacking.

Anna Torrez

Anna was an Adult Ed. Instructor at the Gary Tang Adult Ed. Center from 1995-2005 in Glendale, Arizona. Afterward she returned to Williams, Arizona where she currently works as an English Language Learner/Spanish Instructor for the Williams Elementary-Middle School & a part-time Adult Ed Instructor at Coconino Community College. Her goal in the next few years is to return as a full-time Adult Ed. Instructor because the students stay in their seats!!!

Anna likes to volunteer at her local church, go to the beaches of Hawaii & Mexico, & practice piano.

Favorite quote to the students: "Forget the past, learn from your mistakes, & stay focused on the road ahead....You can do it!"

Anna teaches English Language Acquisition for Adults (ELAA) at the Williams campus.

Carol Wamble

Carol has an A.A. in Pre-Med.and a B.A. in Liberal Studies.She gathers intakes, test scores and attendance records from various sites across Coconino County and enters this data into the state's database. Carol also performs ACCESS queries using SQL for the Adult Education program. Carol has 25 years experience as a Computer Assistant with the Forest Service and just over one year with Adult Education at Coconino Community College.

Michelle Zerr

Michele holds a bachelor's and master's degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation, a Masters in Counseling and a doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction.  In addition to her work in Adult Education, she has held positions at NAU in distance learning and at the graduate college.  She retired from NAU in 2002.

 

Since retiring, Michele has been able to indulge her interest in wood-working, and has set up a shop that is the envy of many of her friends.  She has recently gotten a Welsh terrier puppy, which is enlivening her retirement considerably. 

Michele has been working since July 31, 2006 as a volunteer GED instructor for Radisson Woodlands hotel employees.  Michele has a long-time interest in Adult Education (she worked in the field for the first time in 1974). 

Besides stints at Northland Pioneer College, Western Wyoming College and Northern Arizona Institute of Technology, she was the director of adult education at Native Americans for Community Action from 1992-1996.  Although she has not worked directly in adult education since leaving NACA, she has remained active in the Arizona Association for Lifelong Learning (AALL), serving on their board and holding a variety of offices in that organization.

Laura Zurlo

Laura has a BA in Music from New York University. She is working toward a Montessori

Teacher Certification and an AZ Teacher Certification. Also, she tutors for Literacy

Volunteers of Coconino County, and has just completed two years in the AmeriCorps program.

Laura is teaching ABE/GED at the CCC LEARN Center, Goodwill Industries and the CCC 4th Street Campus  - all in Flagstaff. After one year of tutoring GED students at Native Americans for Community Action through the AmeriCorps program, she accepted the opportunity to continue working in Adult Education part-time. Laura says she "finds Adult Education to be an excellent opportunity to serve the community. I enjoy helping individuals to become more employable and to achieve a sense of accomplishment."
