2.Is there Pre-Admission Testing?

Yes, You are required to take a HESI pre-admission assessment test and answer two essay questions.  NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE MADE. Test scores must be submitted with the application. The HESI Test must be taken at CCC no more than 2 times during an application period. An 80% summary score is required to apply. In addition,  you will be answering two essay questions at the Testing Center when you take your HESI Exam. If you are not taking a HESI Exam, you will need to schedule a time ( at the Testing Center_928 526-7629) to answer the essay question. The questions will be new each application period. Instructions for the essay question will be given at the time of testing. Results of the HESI Exam and your essay answers will be placed in a sealed envelope by the Testing Center and must be included with your application.(no Physics on the test)

A study guide for the HESI Exam is available from the Lone Tree Book Store.

3.What is the licensing process to become a Registered Nurse?

Completion of the requirements for graduation from the Coconino Community College Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing program are not the sole criteria for obtaining a license to practice nursing in Arizona. Licensing requirements are the exclusive responsibility of the Arizona State Board of Nursing (Nurse Practice Act A.R.S. Section 32-1632, et seq.). Students must satisfy any state requirements independently of any requirements necessary for graduation from Coconino Community College. For more information please visit the Arizona Board of Nursing website: www.azbn.gov Under Resources you will find applications and rules and regulations.

4.What course should I take before applying?

All pre-requisite courses as listed on page 3 must be completed. All co-requisite courses must be completed prior to or in sequential order listed on the curriculum outline (page 2). Please carefully plan your curriculum with your advisor to avoid the need to postpone admission.

5.My college courses are “old” do I have to retake them?

You may have some courses “age out” after a number of years and may need to be repeated (Math 10 years, Chemistry 7 years, Biology and Nutrition 5 year limits). Also, please refer to CCC’s catalog for a list of approved Arts and Humanities electives. You must fulfill CCC’s requirements for a degree no matter what other courses you have taken, not all humanities transfer.

6.I work and have a family. What kind of time commitment does this program have? Can I attend part time?

It is important to understand the time commitment required to complete the two year Associate in Applied Science in Nursing Degree program. Many of our nursing students do work part-time, however we don’t believe full-time work is possible and this is not a part-time program. For example, in the first semester you will have 6 hours of nursing classes per week which will require 3-4 hours of study per hour of class time. You will also have two 8 hour clinical/labs per week which will require an additional 4-5 hours of study preparation. This easily adds up to 40-50 hours per week. Additional class and study time is required if you have any co-requisites to complete. Please be sure you are able to make this commitment!

7.Are there any health requirements?

Yes, proof of current immunizations or titers: MMR, Varicella, adult TDAP (within 10years) and a negative TB skin test within 6 months of start of class or negative chest x-ray (within 2 years) will be required after admission to the nursing program. Hepatitis B series is strongly recommended, but not required. It is essential that nursing students be able to perform a number of physical activities in the clinical portion of the program. Minimum health standards for mobility, dexterity, vision, hearing, and preventing spread of infectious disease, are consistent with standards of most health care agencies.

8.Do you do drug testing?

Yes, screening tests for alcohol and drugs may be required for all students admitted to the nursing program prior to any actual clinical assignments.

9.Are there additional fingerprints required besides those for my CNA?

Yes, apply soon, you will need a DPS Fingerprint Clearance Card to start the program. This can take six months and is required for admission. The application for fingerprints is available in the Nursing Department. To obtain more information on fingerprint clearance, please visit the DPS web site: www.azdps.gov and scroll down to Fingerprints.

10. Is travel required during clinicals?

Clinical experiences take place in various health care agencies in and outside Flagstaff. Hours may vary from class schedule depending on the clinical placement and travel will be required at times. Overnight stays may also be required. Expenses associated with clinical travel are the responsibility of the student.

11. Would it be helpful to have a computer?

Absolutely, it is important to understand the various modes of learning in the nursing program. There will be numerous on-line sessions, research projects, assignments as well as e-mail communications. Having 24 hour access to your own computer or laptop, internet service, PowerPoint and Word programs and a printer is essential.

12. How do you decide who is admitted into the program?

This is a partial list of the criteria needed to be considered for admission. A complete packet will be available from the Nursing Department.

• Completion of all five pre-requisite courses, and a cumulative GPA of 2.75  is required.

• Sealed Copies of official transcripts from all other schools except CCC, must be included with the application.

• Applicant must  have a current Arizona Certified Nursing Assistant License(CNA) and submit a copy of license or license number with the application.

• Science Faculty recommendation form

• CNA Instructor or CNA/PCT Supervisor recommendation form ( no more than 2 years old)

13. Is there any paperwork required after I am accepted?

Yes, upon acceptance into the program you will be asked to fill out a student contact for which will include your address, phone and email address which will be available to your fellow classmates. (If you do not want this information shared, notify the nursing office) You will also need to complete a Confidential Medical History (which is not shared), a current list of required immunizations, a DPS fingerprint card, current AHA CPR, and a CNA certification number.
